The Langkawi is the northernmost archipelago on the western side of Peninsular Malaysia, situated 30 km off the mainland. The archipelago is made up of the main island of Langkawi and approximately 100 small islands around it; only four of them are inhabited. Langkawi is very close to the border of Thailand, and the closest island, Koh Lipe, is just 30 minutes away by ferry. The island falls within the Kedah district and covers 479 square kilometres of tropical land.
There are more than 62,000 inhabitants in Langkawi, most of whom live in the capital city of Kuah, with the majority of the population distributed around a number of small villages and across a wide number of island resorts. Most of the inhabitants of Langkawi are of Malay origin (around 90%), followed by a small Chinese and Indian minority, unlike the neighbouring island of Penang, where the majority are of Chinese origin.
On the island, lovers of animals and nature will have a blast. There are a number of different species of animals living on Langkawi. Don't be shocked if you see an enormous monitor lizard next to the lane. If you find a road blocked by a herd of cows or monkeys, don't be shocked either. You are likely to encounter several monkey species , especially in the Burau Bay region. Look out for the Macaques, they prefer to get around people aggressively. The monkeys of the Silver Leaf are very nice, just make sure you do not feed them to guarantee that their natural instincts are preserved.
It is possible to visit Langkawi during the year. Between June and September, there is a mild monsoon season. During this rainy season, we have visited Langkawi numerous times; and all but one visit was with great weather. We were unfortunate for that one visit; it rained from the moment we arrived before we took off again by aeroplane. It had been raining hard non-stop during the days and nights of those four days. This is only an exception; all the other trips at this time of year were pleasant with a lot of sun and at the end of the day, of course, the odd rain storm. The weather in Langkawi is nice for the rest of the year.
A picture spot in Langkawi, featuring a 12-metre tall eagle statue, is the Dataran Lang, popularly known as Eagle Square. This giant eagle statue is situated in such a way that it overlooks the Kuah Jetty. The Square is beautifully bordered by picturesque rivers, bridges and fountains. At Dataran Lang, there are some stalls selling local traditional pottery and crafts. The nearby sunset spot provides a splendid, warm view of the falling sun.
Underwater World Langkawi, the largest aquarium in Malaysia, is home to more than 4000 aquatic life forms, stretching over 60,000 square feet. Located at the southern end of Pantai Cenang, Jurassic Arapaima, the world's biggest freshwater fish, is the main attraction of the huge white-washed structure.
The Underwater World Complex-Sub Antarctic, Tropical and Temperate-is divided into three different parts. The Sub Antarctic section, which is home to the famous penguin-arium, is the main highlight of these three. Underwater World's other highlights include a 3D cinema, a cafeteria, and an Educational Resource Centre.
Located at Jalan Air Hangat, with an altitude of 881 metres, Gunung Raya is Langkawi's highest peak. A granite formation, the mountain peak is situated in the centre of Langkawi, which offers an impressive panoramic view of the island and the surrounding sea. It is believed that Gunung Raya is a cursed form of Mat Raya, a giant who once lived on the island. At the top of the mountain, the D'Coconut Hill Resort houses an observation tower with the best views of the Andaman Sea, Thailand's mainland and Langkawi. To reach the top, a total of 4287 steps have to be climbed.
The Langkawi Art in Paradise 3D is an immersive 3D museum with an optical illusion of about 200 artworks and murals. The museum is the largest 3D museum in Malaysia and the second largest in the world, housed in a 3-storey building spread across nine interactive zones. The artworks in the Art in Paradise 3D museum are hand-painted by 23 leading Korean artists, situated next to the famous Langkawi Cable Car. The mind-stirring painting of the Kuala Lumpur skyline is the big highlight of the 3D museum.
Located at the northern end of Langkawi along Pantai Pasir Hatim, Tanjung Rhu is one of the best beaches in Malaysia. The 50-metre wide beach is famous for its cleanliness, relaxing atmosphere and bewitching sunset views, secluded from the heavy crowd and buzz of the city.
'Tanjung' in Malay means 'Cape' and 'Rhu' comes from the evergreen plant known as the Sea Pine Tree. So, one can spot jungles of evergreen trees with green cliffs and a small lake with campers and a few cafes on the way to the beach. There are numerous enjoyable activities to participate in, such as boating and jet ski tours, along with the peaceful Tanjung Rhu Beach arena. The public beach is separated by a fence from Tanjung Rhu Resort's privately owned beach.

A 125-metre curved suspension bridge, situated at the end of the Langkawi Cable Car ride, is the Langkawi Sky Bridge. Touted as one of the longest curve suspension bridges in the world, it overlooks Mount Mat Cinchang and provides panoramic views that are mind-stirring. The view from the Langkawi Sky Bridge, suspended at an altitude of 100 metres from sea level, includes the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls and a rain forest, all of which make the walk worthwhile. The sky bridge can be reached from Langkawi Cable Car's Top Station and is built to hold 250 people at a time.
The Langkawi Cable Car, situated in the Oriental Village in the upper northwest of Langkawi Island, brings riders to the top of Mount Mat Cincang (Langkawi's second highest peak). Also known as the Langkawi SkyCab, the panoramic view of the surrounding islands and the Andaman Sea is popular.
Langkawi Cable Car, officially opened on 1 November 2002, is the world's steepest SkyCab and has the longest mono-cable free span.
